Marvel Schebler Float System and Specifications

How it works

The float system controls the level and supply of gasoline in the fuel bowl throughout the operating range of the engine.

Under actual operating conditions the fuel level and float and lever automatically position themselves so that the inward flow of gasoline to the carburetor is equal to the outward flow of gasoline to the engine.

The fuel level that the float mechanism must maintain throughout the operating range of the engine has been carefully established and tested by our engineering department. The production department tests each float valve and float valve seat as a matched set to assure that there is no fuel leakage between the valve and seat before they are assembled in the carburetor.

Changing the float setting from what is recommended in an effort to improve the operation of the carburetor or in an effort to prevent flooding, will only result in faulty carburetor operation.

When the float bowl (1) is empty, the float and lever (2) and float valve (3) drop and fuel under pressure from the float pump is forced through the float valve seat (4) around the float valve (3) and into the fule bowl (1). As the fuel in the bowl approaches the correct operating level it raises the float and lever (2) with enough force to raise the float vlave and cut off the flow of fuel into the bowl. As fuel feeds through the carburetor jets into the engine the fuel level (5) drops, allowing additional fuel to enter the fuel bowl.

Under actual operating conditions the fuel level and float and lever automatically position themselves so that the inward flow of gasoline to the carburetor is equal to the outward flow of gasoline to the engine.

As can readily be seen the float system under the most favorable of operating conditions is subjected to a certain amount of wear. Under severe conditions or conditions that result in excessive vibrations being transmitted to the carburetor, float valve and float valve seat, wear is accelerated.

Servicing

Anytime the carburetor is diassembled, the following should be done:

  1. Examine float valve for any signs of wear.
  2. Examine float for any signs of failure. Test brass floats by submerging in hot water and looking for air bubbles. Nitrophyl or cork floats should be replaced during any standard rebuild.
  3. Set float height to proper specification and verify the assembly works smoothly with no binding.
  4. Clean any strainer or filter in gasoline and with pressurized air. Always replace filter gaskets.
